The city of Essaouira will not be forgotten by the future network of fast trains across the Kingdom. It will not be directly connected to the TGV, as we have known since the beginning of 2024, but will benefit from a so-called high-performance train, which will run at 200 km/h from the future TGV station planned in Chichaoua.
This information was just given before the House of Representatives by the Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayou, in response to a question posed by MP Malika Akhachkhouch. Essaouira had felt cheated, but is back in the game (see our map). The strongman of the city of trade winds, André Azoulay, advisor to King Mohammed VI, is surely not for nothing...
The trains scheduled to run from Chichaoua to Essaouira should be those ordered from the Spanish company CAF (our photo).
The minister clarified, however, that this project is not yet planned. Studies conducted so far, however, have concluded that the Marrakech-Essaouira journey will not exceed 1 hour and 10 minutes.
As for the Marrakech-Agadir TGV line, which should in principle be served by the brand new TGV model called Avelia Horizon (our photo), but for which funding has still not been secured, the Minister of Transport indicated that the planning review will be completed "during the year", followed by the acquisition of the land.
However, the appropriation of priority land has already been completed : 7 km in the urban perimeter of Marrakech and 20 hectares in Agadir. The future train station of the capital of Souss is still planned for the Al Mohammadi district. When will it be operational? The mystery remains.
